SUBMERSED AERATION VS. FLOATING FOUNTAINS VS. SURFACE AERATORS: WHICH IS BEST FOR YOU?

Published in Fountains & Aeration · 24 October 2022
A healthy pond provides a great backdrop to your landscape as well as a welcoming spot for wildlife. Keep your pond looking great by working with one of the specialized pond and lake management companies in Florida.

The key to a functional pond is oxygen. Without adequate oxygen, algae growth can take over, making the pond an eyesore and discouraging wildlife from seeking shelter. Implementing some form of aeration into your pond management keeps the pond oxygenated and looking its best.

There are three types of aeration systems you can use to add oxygen to your pond. A small, shallow pond may only require one aeration source, while a larger, deeper pond may need some combination of the choices discussed below.

Floating Fountain

The solution many people think of when considering pond aeration is a floating fountain. These make a great choice for ponds in highly visible areas as it's a nice way to add beauty to the landscape in a functional way.

Not all ponds are suitable for floating fountains. One factor to consider is the design of the fountain. A floating fountain with a fine or intricate display may not move enough water to keep the pond oxygenated.

Surface Aerator

A surface aerator is simply designed to move water. There is no fancy spray pattern like you get with a floating fountain, but the water does move along the surface. This adds visual interest even though appearance isn't the priority with surface aerators. The high flow pumps oxygen into the water, making it a great choice for ponds that struggle with algae and weed growth.

Submersed Aerator

For deep ponds, a submersed aerator is an effective choice. With a shore-based compressor and tubing dispersed across the bottom of the pond, submersed aerators provide an effective way to circulate water. The aerator doesn't add oxygen directly, but the circulation provided by the fine air bubbles increases oxygen levels.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to oxygenating your pond. This is why working with experienced pond and lake management companies in Florida is an important step in keeping your pond looking its best. Some ponds may do well with a simple floating fountain, while others may require a combination of aeration methods for best results.

Pond maintenance pros will take the size and depth of your pond into consideration, as well as the amount of sun exposure, types of flora and fauna, and your goals for the body of water. They will work with you to come up with a plan that is both effective and esthetically pleasing.

Once the aeration system is installed, the professionals will handle the maintenance as well as make any adjustments necessary throughout the season to keep your pond healthy and clear.
