We recently read a report from Environmental Working Group, a non-profit organization set out to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. In the report, they discovered that there are traces of glyphosate are in children’s cereal brands. Some of which are popular brands that are most likely in your pantry.

So, you might be asking yourself, “What in the heck is glyphosate?”
Picture
According to the National Pesticide Information Center, it is a herbicide that is used on the leaves of plants to kill both broadleaf plants and grasses to regulate the growth and ripen specific crops.

Glyphosate was approved for use in the United States in 1974 and is now one of the most popular herbicides in the country. There are many products containing glyphosate that are used in the agricultural industry to control aquatic plants. Products that we at Crosscreek Environmental do not use.

One product with an active ingredient of glyphosate that you are probably familiar with is the weedkiller, Roundup.

Now you're probably thinking, “why in the world are there traces of glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup in my children’s cereal?”

Environmental Worker Group (EWG) tested a wide variety of cereal products; 45 products to be exact. Some of which were conventional products and some that were organic products. They found traces of glyphosate in 43 of the conventional products and five of the organic products.

For more details on glyphosate and EWG’s report on the topic, please visit Environmental Worker Group’s website.

There are traces of many agricultural chemicals in the foods we eat, even organic foods. When you apply a chemical to a crop or your face it doesn't break down immediately. Many preciously applied chemicals are still in the soil in very small amounts. That is a given. One chemical may be labeled for many crops. You might eat several of those crops in a given day. That is why the EPA requires chemical companies to develope an Average Daily Intake, am estimate of the amount of chemical residue eaten on average. But these amounts are in the parts per million.
